Route 66 was a mostly two lane highway that extended from Chicago to Los Angeles, through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, before gradually giving up to the modern interstate. Most of the old pavement is still there, and can be followed with the right maps and directions. I drove the entire length of old 66 in 2012, and invite you to follow along!

Missouri Route 66 - Villa Ridge
VILLA RIDGE, MISSOURI. Built in 1946, the Sunset Motel in Villa Ridge is your basic Route 66 motel, size appropriate for a two lane highway (just 12 rooms), and with a snazzy neon sign to pull weary travelers in. Current restoration plans for the business allow for some of the rooms to be reserved for overnight modern day 66 travelers, with the rest being rented as apartments. The sign was restored in 2009 with help from the Route 66 Association of Missouri, and relit for the first time in 30 years. Nice work, folks!
