Route 66 was a mostly two lane highway that extended from Chicago to Los Angeles, through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, before gradually giving up to the modern interstate. Most of the old pavement is still there, and can be followed with the right maps and directions. I drove the entire length of old 66 in 2012, and invite you to follow along!

Missouri Route 66 - Cuba
CUBA, MISSOURI. Taking advantage of the new
interstate highway, Route 66, original owners Robert W. & Margaret
Martin hired Leo Friesenhan in the 1930's to build the Wagon Wheel
Motel. According to the Wheel's website: "Leo's combination of stone, design, and nearly indestructible mortar recipe has endured for
75 years, giving the Wagon Wheel its spot on the National Registry of
Historic Places." Indeed it has, and combined with the restoration of
the last two years by new ownership, it all looks brand new. This is a
set of cabins at the motel in June 2012, when I spent the night. My room
was #10, first door on the left.
