Route 66 was a mostly two lane highway that extended from Chicago to Los Angeles, through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, before gradually giving up to the modern interstate. Most of the old pavement is still there, and can be followed with the right maps and directions. I drove the entire length of old 66 in 2012, and invite you to follow along!

Illinois Route 66 - Mitchell
MITCHELL, ILLINOIS. A last bit of neon before leaving Illinois 66, the Luna Cafe goes back before there was a Route 66, having been built in 1924. A local bar these days happy to host a thirsty 66 traveler, the business has a storied history. Reputedly host to the usual Chicago gangsters, at one time this old bar had a den of iniquity upstairs while running a gambling casino downstairs. I'm sure patrons of the restaurant on the main floor did not notice a thing.
